Before we start

When you first create your Lifeboat store, the site will be blank. In the following steps, we'll go over on how to get the basic setup, so that you can start receiving orders and most importantly. Get paid!
Make sure to always save your changes after every step.

1. Basic Settings

1.1 Store Settings

Head to Store Settings and;

  1. Enter a "Store Name".
    The store name is used all across the site to represent your brand.
  2. Specify the "Currency" of your store.
    A Lifeboat store can only be in 1 currency, so choose this wisely. All your product listings and orders will be in this currency.
  3. Specify an email where to receive all orders and notifications in "Notifications Email".
    All the orders and other important notifications will be sent to this email. If not specified you won't be able to receive orders.
1.2 Menus

Head to Store Settings > Menus and;

  1. Click on "+ ADD MENU"
  2. Give your menu a "Title".
    The menu name can be anything you prefer. This will not be visible to your customers.
  3. Drag items from the section "Add Menu Item" to the the section labelled "Drop menu items here", to add them to the menu.;
  4. Fill in the form that pops up with the relevant information.
  5. Click "SAVE"
1.3 Branding

From the Theme Setting;

  1. Upload your "Logo".
    Use .PNG for the best results.
  2. Select the menu you've created in step 1.2 Menus as "Main Menu".
  3. Optionally: Specify a "Favicon".
    This should a square image with a transparent background, that represents your online store, and is used in the browser tabs.
  4. Click on the "Custom Fields" tab.
  5. Select your "Primary Accent Color" and "Secondary Accent Color".
    These colors will determine how your online store looks, and should match your branding.

Taxes & Shipping

2.1 Creating Tax Codes

Go to Store Settings > Tax Codes. You'll see that your store, only has one Tax Code available, "Tax Exempt" which will apply 0% tax to your orders. To specify more tax rates, click on; "+ TAX CODE" and;

  1. Give the Tax Code a meaningful name such as; "EU Trade 18%" in "Name".
  2. Specify the default percentage to apply in "Tax %".
    IMPORTANT NOTE: This should be the default percentage, should be applicable to any product using this code, when purchased from anywhere in the world.
  3. Click "SAVE".
2.2 Setting up Shipping

Shipping is a very broad subject when it comes to online commerce, in this guide we'll go over the basics of shipping.

2.2.1 Delivery Zones

Delivery Zones are used to determine, which areas your online store fulfills orders to, and how each zone's shipping cost should be calculated. Head on to Shipping > Delivery Zones and click on "+ ADD DELIVERY ZONE".

  1. Specify a "Zone Name".
  2. Specify the "Zones" which make up this Delivery Zone.
  3. Optionally; Specify a "Handling Fee".
    This fee will be applied ONCE to every order shipping to this Delivery Zone.
  4. Click "SAVE".
2.2.2 Shipping Classes

Shipping classes group certain products together, into a pre-defined class as to calculated shipping cost in your online store. Go to Shipping and click on "+ ADD SHIPPING CLASS".

  1. Give your Shipping Class a meaningful name such as; "Lightweight Package".
  2. Optionally: Specify a "Base Fee".
    If specified, this fee will be applied to each product that uses this Shipping Class during checkout of your Lifeboat store.
  3. Click on "+ ADD SHIPPING OPTION" to specify more targeted shipping pricing;
    IMPORTANT NOTE: At least one Shipping Option should be configured for checkout to be possible.
    1. Select a "Shipping Provider".
      If you don't find the provider that you're using go to; Shipping > Providers.
    2. Select a "Delivery Zone".
      This is where, this Shipping Class can ship to, when using the selected Shipping Provider.
    3. Specify a "Fee" (can be left blank if offering free shipping).
      Each product using this Shipping Class, in the specified Delivery Zone, fulfilled by the selected Provider will incur this fee.

3. Products

3.1 Creating your first product

From the Products section, click on "+ PRODUCT" and;

  1. Fill in a "Title" for your product.
    This title will be used all over your site to represent this product. It should clearly showcase what the product is without being too long.
  2. OPTIONAL: Click on the "Description" tab and;
    1. Enter a short summary about this product in the "Summary" field.
    2. Enter the full description of your product in the "Description" field.
  3. Click on the "Pricing & Stock" tab and;
    1. Enter the retail price of your product in the "Price" field.
      VERY IMPORTANT: Prices should be exclusive of any taxes, shipping or handling costs at this stage.
    2. Select the appropriate "Shipping Class" from the ones created in 2.2 Setting up Shipping.
    3. Select the "Tax Code" which should be charged for this product, from the ones created in 2.1 Creating Tax Codes.
    4. OPTIONAL: Toggle "Track Stock" to keep track of this product's inventory within your Lifeboat store.
  4. Click "SAVE".
3.2 Refining the product listing

From the Products section, edit the product we just created by clicking on the "pencil icon" and;

  1. Upload Images
    1. Click on the "Gallery" tab.
    2. Upload up to 10 product images.
  2. Add Additional Descriptions
    1. Click on the "Description" tab.
    2. Expand "Additional Descriptions".
    3. Click on "+ ADDITIONAL DESCRIPTION to create more information about the product, example; "Technical Data".
  3. Setup SEO Settings
    1. Click on the "INFO" tab.
    2. Expand "SEO Settings" tab.
    3. Update the "URL" for this product.
    4. Create a "Meta Title" and "Meta Description" for this product.
3.3 Setting up a Collection

A collection allows for grouping of products so that, discounts and UI elements can be updated automatically, without the need to update each product individually. Open the Products > Collections page and, click on "+ ADD Collection".

  1. Give your collection a "Name".
    Examples: Scandinavian Chairs, Featured Products, Easter Sale,...
  2. Upload an "Image" for your product collection.
    If left blank, the first image from the first product will be used.
  3. Specify a "Description".
  4. From the "Products" search field, select the products which belong to this collection.
  5. Optionally; Specify "SEO Settings".
  6. Click "SAVE".

4. Getting Paid

4.1 Setup PayPal payments
Before we get started
  1. Create a PayPal Business account; PayPal Business Account - Creation Page.
  2. Create a PayPal App; PayPal - App Creation Page .
    IMPORTANT NOTE: Keep your API credentials safe, if you loose these, payments from your Lifeboat store could stop.
  1. Go to Store Settings > Checkout.
  2. Click on the tab "Payment Methods".
  3. Click on the "pencil icon" next to "PayPal".
  4. Toggle the "Enable" button.
  5. Enter the "API Client" key, you got when creating the PayPal App.
  6. Enter the "API Secret" key, you got when creating the PayPal App.
  7. Click "SAVE".
4.1 Setup Credit Card payments
Prerequisites
  1. Create a Stripe account; Stripe Account - Creation Page.
  2. Create API keys; Stripe - API Keys Creation Page .
    IMPORTANT NOTE: Keep your API credentials safe, if you loose these, payments from your Lifeboat store could stop.
  1. Go to Store Settings > Checkout.
  2. Click on the tab "Payment Methods".
  3. Click on the "pencil icon" next to "Stripe".
  4. Toggle the "Enable" button.
  5. Enter the "API Key" key, you got from the Stripe API Keys page.
  6. Enter the "Secret Key" key, you got from the Stripe API Keys page.
  7. Click "SAVE".

5. Putting your Lifeboat Store Live!

5.1 Linking your social media accounts

Linking your social media accounts to your Lifeboat store, gives your customers additional peace of mind that, they are on the correct brand. It also provides a better user-experience for your customers to follow you. To get started go to Marketing > Social and click on "+ SOCIAL LINK".

  1. From the "Site / Platform" drop down select which account you're adding.
    Note: If you don't find the site you're trying to add, send an email to [email protected], so we can issue it in the next release.
  2. Enter the public "URL" of your profile or landing page for the selected account.
    CAUTION: In many platforms, when you're viewing your account, you have a special admin link in the address bar. Make sure to use the public one here instead.
5.2 Setup your contact page

Give your customers a way to reach you directly to, anyone experiencing problems with your online shop, or wants to reach out. To get started go to; Pages > System Pages and click on pencil icon, next to "Contact".

  1. Enter a public facing "Email" address.
    IMPORTANT: This will be VISIBLE on your store pages and can be different from the one used to receive notifications.
  2. Enter the "Address" of your physical store / office (if applicable).
    If possible, your address should be added, as it gives your customers more trust towards your online store.
  3. Enter a "Telephone No" where customers can reach you, if they need to.
    This will be PUBLIC facing on all your Lifeboat shop page.
5.3 Polishing your store

We're almost done! Let's polish up the pages of your Lifeboat store to leave a lasting impression to your customers. To get started go to; Theme and click on the "Custom Fields" tab.

  1. Upload a "Home banner".
    This will be the first thing your customers see when they land on your store's home page, make sure it's a high quality image that reflects what you're selling.
  2. Select your "Home Featured Collection" and "Home Featured Collection 2".
    Use the collections created in Setting up a collection to feature products on the home page of your store.
  3. Choose a "Footer Quick Link Menu".
    This menu should be short and reference the important pages on your Lifeboat online shop. It can be created using the steps in; Menus
5.4 GO LIVE!

CONGRATULATIONS! You're Lifeboat online shop is now fully setup and ready to start receiving orders!

Frequently asked questions

Yes, your Lifeboat store can be pointed to a domain of your choice.
Currently this option is not available through the interface, speak to us on [email protected] to set up your domain.

Yes, navigate to Discounts, in your admin interface to setup discounts.

The list of payment methods is constantly growing, but if we don't support yours just yet message us on [email protected] We'll try to integrate it with the next batch of payment methods

For the time being we only have 1 available theme, however we have plan to include up to 10 more by the end of 2021. If you're a designer / developer with experience in ecommerce get in touch.

Currently we don't support "Drop Shipping", and don't have plans to setup such systems in the near future.
